Small Formats – Abstract Paintings in Small Format

Small formats combine concentration with presence. On a relatively compact surface, pictorial spaces emerge in which color, structure, and painterly movement can have a particularly precise effect. Especially in this range of formats, the process of creation often remains clearly visible – layers of paint, traces, and fragments become central components of the composition.
Many of these works are created in parallel with larger paintings in the studio. They take up themes, color processes or structures from various series and develop independent compositions from them.
Small formats have a pleasant balance: they are present enough to function as independent artworks in a space, yet remain flexible and easy to combine with other pieces.
For orientation: this category includes works with a size between approximately 101 and 199 centimetres. At this scale, abstract painting unfolds a particular clarity: movements of colour, layering and structural details become clearly visible without the painting completely dominating the space.
The precision of small pictorial spaces
In the smaller format, every trace of paint takes on greater significance. Color fragments, material traces and movements condense into concentrated compositions that draw the eye particularly strongly to the painterly structure.
Small formats in my series
Works in this format are created in various groups of works in my studio – for example in abstract paintings from Field of Mars, in color-intensive compositions from Out of the Light, or in structural explorations of other series.
