Square Paintings – Abstract Art in the Square Format

Square paintings possess a special balance. Unlike portrait or landscape formats, the square creates a calm, focused pictorial space in which color, structure, and movement can have an equal effect.
In my work, this format opens up its own form of composition. Layers of color, fragment structures, or gestural movements develop within an even frame that suggests neither a horizontal nor a vertical direction. This creates a pictorial space in which painterly processes can unfold freely.
Many of my series use the square to make color and structure visible in a concentrated form. The following works show different approaches to this format within my painting.
The Square as Pictorial Space
The square format creates a special balance within the composition. Without a dominant direction, an open pictorial space emerges in which colour, movement and material structure have an equal impact.
Square formats in my series
Square formats appear in various series of my paintings, for example in experimental works from Organic Grounds, in colour-intensive compositions of the paint box or in structural works from Field of Mars.
