A source of inspiration in art: contemporary painting on the paint box.

The leaps of thought that the paint box generates as a symbol lead many viewers back toward childhood. The title "Unterwegs" (On the Road) is an invitation to steer one’s own associations in a different direction without losing one’s personal touch. The paint box, painted in a contemporary way, becomes a source of inspiration – from concrete to abstract.

A contemporary painting – experimental painting on a wall sculpture.

With my experimental painting on the oversized paint box, contemporary object art emerges: a painted sculpture for the wall. Through the juxtaposition of graceful color fields there arise Tensions in Form and Color On one side, the primary colors yellow, red, and blue, accompanied by orange, green, black, pink, and white. These colors can be found in this or a similar form in almost every paint box. On the other side, the “used” paint box pans, the colorful spaces in between, and the colored border area. The spatial, partly complementary effect of the colors is further enhanced by the real shadows cast by the paint box.

The construction of the paint box.

This paint box was built from wooden slats, canvases, and cardboard. The painting object "Unterwegs III" measures 92x80x3 cm and was created in 2017 in Wiesbaden. I first built the paint box using chipboard and different types of slats, partly glued with wood glue and partly screwed together. The small round paint wells are deep cup lids. The lids were framed with wooden strips of equal height, the resulting gaps were filled with expanding foam and sealed with cardboard before being glued onto the canvas. To create a surface that looks as realistic as possible, the paint containers and paint-box wells were primed with adhesive concrete and thick layers of acrylic paint. The primer was then “sealed” with glue.

Acrylic and oil paints, adhesive concrete, and glue were used for processing and painting the artwork.

Useful information on displaying the painting “Unterwegs III.”

There is no “top” or “bottom”; the painting can be displayed in any orientation. That is why the painting has been signed on the back. The glossy varnish protects the artwork from color changes. If there is a lot of light opposite “Unterwegs III” – for example through a window – I can replace the gloss varnish with a matte varnish. You will achieve optimal presentation if there is space around the painting. The width of the wall surface (including the painting) should be at least 1.5 and at most 4.5 meters.
