“Bullfight” – dynamics in the paintbox
With “Bullfight”, Mark Hellbusch transforms the paintbox into a powerful, large‑format object. The familiar motif becomes a carrier of movement, tension and energy. The title deliberately steers perception in an expressive direction and opens up associations of dynamism, confrontation and rhythm – without limiting the openness of the abstract visual language.
Material and construction
The work is based on a complex, handcrafted construction of wood, canvas and integrated paint pans. The surface was built up and worked in several layers, resulting in a sculptural, relief-like structure. Acrylic and oil paints as well as various binders give the object a dense, multi-layered materiality.
Color and spatial effect
The composition thrives on the contrast of intense color fields – from primary colors to nuanced mixtures. The reddish base tone amplifies the energetic effect of the work. The physical depth creates real shadows that further emphasize the interplay of color and form and extend the object into the surrounding space.
Abstraction and interpretation
“Bullfight” is conceived as an open painting. The combination of experimental painting, object-like structure, and the idea expressed in the title invites individual interpretation. This creates a field of tension between a concrete impression and free, personal perception.
Presentation
The work can be freely oriented and is not bound to a fixed hanging direction. For optimal impact, it is best presented with sufficient space so that the interplay of color, structure, and shadow can be fully experienced.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997 and have worked with a wide variety of themes in painting.
