Abstract animals as a motif in art.

The palette is Source of inspiration and a tool for artists who engage deeply with the mixing of the perfect colours for their artworks. In "From the Light" typical mixing movements and forms that arise on the palette are taken up in order to present concrete motifs – there is an animal to be seen in every painting – in an unusual way. At the same time, compositions are created that allow the viewer to drift off into abstraction. With prolonged viewing, form (animal motif), environment (choice of colors) and palette (symbolism) interweave into more abstract sensations such as “chance,” “life,” “development,” and, in the case of these animal motifs quite specifically: “evolution.” 

The creation of the paintings in "Out of the Light".

The idea for the theme “Out of the Light” was born while clearing away the palettes of my painting students. For on their paint boxes, my “desired” visual language was already becoming apparent.

The often small-format canvases are primed in white. After the motif has been drawn, they are used for “mixing paint.”

The lightness of the paintings arises from the brightness of the white-primed canvases in combination with the colorful, gracefully applied color fields. These result in an engaging, seemingly random composition. The grace of the forms is crucial for a calm yet lively perception of the composition, as it allows the viewer to shift perspective even after looking for a longer time. Parts of the color fields define the shape of the motif, while the colors – in part – convey spatial depth. The magic emerges between reality and abstraction.

The contemplation of abstract painting and the animal motif creates an interplay of perception.

Although the painting is experimental, it is still “reined in” at certain boundaries. The outline of the motif acts as a kind of barrier when mixing the colors. This ensures that the motif remains perceptible. The choice of colors is not entirely random either: the animals are shown in the colors of their surroundings. In this way, spontaneous compositions of form and color emerge within a conceptual framework. Since the motif is constructed only along part of the boundaries of the color mixtures, the eye repeatedly shifts back to the abstract overall composition.
