Judy – The Smile in Competition
Expressive distortion and fragile presence
The work “Judy” (50 × 40 cm, 2005) shows the striking effect of exaggerated sensory organs that is typical of the Hunters series. With a repeatedly suggested, expressively red mouth and intensely accentuated eyes, an image emerges between charm and unease.
The exaggerated smile appears both friendly and unsettling – a symbol of ambivalence in social competition: between genuine closeness and the pressure of constant self-presentation. The impasto, textured background reinforces the fragile, almost brittle effect of the portrait.
“Judy” is an example of how the series Hunters artistically condenses the themes of communication, perception, and assertion while at the same time translating the personal into the expressive.
