Between appearance and dissolution

Turquoise forms the calm ground of “Output 1”. Above it, green, yellow, blue, and dark tones condense into a vertical presence. Something seems to be taking shape – perhaps a figure, a landscape, a memory of something once seen. Yet as soon as a form appears to settle, it dissolves back into color.

The painting belongs to the outputs of the Schmiertafel series. Its starting point is astonishingly precise. Its result is not.

30 minutes of preparation. 1–2 minutes of painting.

Colors, tools and process are prepared for roughly half an hour. The actual painting, by contrast, takes only about one to two minutes.

In this brief moment, the balance between planning and happening tips over. Color meets color, movements overlap, traces disappear beneath new traces. What was previously fixed suddenly becomes just one possibility among others.

Preparation creates order. The act of painting throws it off balance.

And somewhere in between, something comes into being that was not there before.

Prompt, process, output

One conceptual starting point of the Schmiertafel is communication with systems like ChatGPT: We formulate an input, a system processes it – and something comes back.

This seemingly simple movement becomes painting in the Schmiertafel. Here, too, there is an input. Here, too, there is a process. And in the end, an output.

Yet between beginning and end lies an area that cannot be fully controlled. Material, speed, chance and decision interlock. The result follows its starting point – and moves away from it at the same time.

Perhaps this is precisely where the true subject of the outputs lies: in the small unknown stretch between what is put in and what comes back.

Original paintings by Mark Hellbusch

Output 1 is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The painting is part of the Schmiertafel series and combines abstract color painting with an experimental process between preparation, speed, and loss of control.

The work is already in a private collection.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work up to 2007 was strongly influenced by expressive painting, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting.
