Large tree paintings for modern spaces
With its 100 × 150 cm, Tree VI has a strong spatial presence. The large-format painting unfolds its effect not only through the motif, but also through its size. The expansive crown of the tree fills the picture surface and creates a calm yet powerful aura.
Whether in the living room, office or open spaces – the work develops a clear visual impact even from a greater distance and at the same time invites you to discover the numerous details of the painting up close.
Green color worlds between nature and memory
Green dominates the painting. Different nuances of turquoise, green and earthy tones overlap and create an atmosphere reminiscent of forest, landscape and nature.
No concrete depiction of a specific place emerges. Instead, the tree feels like a memory of nature – familiar and at the same time open to personal associations. Color becomes the true carrier of mood.
The tree as a symbol in contemporary art
Hardly any motif is as deeply anchored in our cultural memory as the tree. It stands for growth, constancy, life and change.
In Tree VI this symbol remains recognisable, yet it begins to dissolve. The form is present, but loses its clarity.
Oil painting between figuration and abstraction
Like all works in the series, Tree VI was also created in oil. The different layers of color remain visible and document the painting’s creation process. Traces of earlier decisions, reworkings, and spontaneous gestures are not concealed, but deliberately made part of the finished work.
As a result, the painting moves between representational painting, abstract art, and experimental image-making.
Smear Board – Familiar signs reconsidered
The Schmiertafel series deals with generally familiar pictorial signs such as flowers, smileys, trees or figures. They are simple forms that everyone recognizes and whose meaning seems fixed.
In these paintings, the form remains while its execution becomes increasingly uncertain. Color no longer follows the expected paths, decisions become visible, corrections leave new traces. From something familiar, a state emerges between order and dissolution.
The works are about the fragility of simple certainties. They show how even stable signs can lose their self-evidence and how small shifts can open up a new, more open pictorial space.
Original painting by Mark Hellbusch
Baum VI is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden near Frankfurt. Like all works in the series, the painting emerges in an open process between symbol, color and experimental painting.

Alongside Tree VI, the Schmiertafel series includes numerous other motifs, among them smileys, figures and flowers. Together they form a body of work that explores familiar signs, visible decisions and the beauty of the imperfect.
