Contemporary painting with condensed structure

“Alex” (30 × 24 cm, 2025) is part of the series “In the End Green” and at first glance appears like a self-contained, almost compact surface. The green here is not light or flat, but dense, physical and palpably built up.

The color seems to push across the canvas, to accumulate and in certain places to condense almost physically. The result is an image that relies less on classical composition and more on inner movement and materiality.

Movement beneath the surface

At the center of the painting a darker zone forms, acting like a hub. From here, the structure seems to spread out in all directions. It is as if something were working beneath the surface – not visible as a clear form, but as an energy that forces its way through.

The darker areas appear like the shadows of a movement that has not yet come to an end. They evoke natural processes, compression, pressure or the slow shifting of layers. Nothing is clear-cut, yet much feels familiar.

Green as landscape and memory

The surface bears traces reminiscent of vegetative structures. Forms appear and disappear again, as if something had inscribed itself into the paint and had then been partially covered over.

The green unfolds in many nuances – from rich, deep areas to somewhat more open, softer zones. This creates a kind of landscape effect without allowing a specific place to be fixed. It is more a memory of nature than a depiction of it.

The title “Alex” – a calm counterpoint

The name “Alex” stands in an intriguing relationship to the density of the painting. It feels familiar and human, while the painting itself appears rather raw and elemental.

It is precisely this connection that makes access easier: the painting remains abstract, yet at the same time gains a level that creates closeness. As in the entire series, a dialogue emerges between something personal and something larger and barely tangible.

Light and perception

“Alex” changes significantly with the light. Raking light brings out the structure, accentuates the raised areas and makes the depth of the surface visible. Without this lighting, the painting appears calmer, almost closed off.

It therefore unfolds its full impact in an environment where one takes time – not at a distance, but up close, in slow viewing.
