The abstract landscape as an experiment on canvas.

“Field of Mars XXVI” measures 30 x 24 cm, is made from leftover paint and arose from an experiment. The paint remnants used for this painting are colourful. Acrylics, oil paints and leftover varnish interact in the most diverse variations of colour, shape and size. The sizes of the paint residues range from very fine dust to paint chunks with a diameter of about 0.5 cm. It is the differences in size of the paint remnants that allow for a composition – in this case a cratered landscape from a bird’s-eye view. Below are some key facts about the painting.

A crater of leftover paint.

From a distance, the work at first appears to depict an earthy or sandy, beach-like surface. As you take a few steps toward the painting, you realize that it is completely colorful and made up of small paint remnants. The abstract painting becomes more concrete the longer you look at it: in your mind, wind and water emerge and, eventually, the morphology of a crater in the landscape.

The small-format landscape for a stimulating atmosphere at home.

"Field of Mars XXVI" is a small painting. It works best in a hallway, on a staircase, or in a niche in the room. The unusual spatiality – the tangible haptics (three-dimensional) combined with the contrasts (two-dimensional) – together with the simple composition creates a very original and interesting ambience that can only be fully explored over time. The spatial and compositional effect is extremely subtle, so that a very delicate, elegant, and stimulating presence emanates from this painting.

The "Field of Mars" works look very elegant in vertical or horizontal rows. In this way, larger spaces can also be decorated with the small-format Field of Mars works. For pictures that hang next to each other, it is important to note that difference is crucial. A crater that appears yellow-brown from a distance, between beach-like reddish wave structures and a grayish-looking vortex, is more inspiring to the eye than several craters of the same size side by side. These can quickly be overlooked as a mere pattern.

Also interesting is the PriceThe paintings on the theme of “Marsfeld” are not cheap, but extremely inexpensive in relation to their quality. For one person, this means a relatively low-risk entry into the world of contemporary art. For another, perhaps the opportunity to make even smaller rooms modern, interesting, and affordable. With this kind of art, you make a quiet exclamation mark. The mere fact that paint remnants are the defining element of the image gives your interior something highly original. Good to know.

Binder as adhesive.

The special adhesives, the cotton and the binder used for these experiments ensure that the paint residues adhere very well to the canvas. If some paint residues do fall off – perhaps due to transport or curious children's fingers – it's not a big deal: All 'Marsfield' paintings consist of multiple layers so that the canvas remains covered even with minor damage.

paintings on the website.

I always strive to present an authentic picture of my work on the website. The paintings are photographed either in the studio or next door in the living room.still, the colors you see on your monitor may differ slightly from the actual colors on the painting. The images that show the painting in an interior were generated using the “Smartist” app. This app presents paintings in exactly the right size ratio to the room and can also make artworks appear framed in any way.

Art with leftover paint and what moves me as an artist in the process

Art with leftover paint is not accessible to everyone. Nevertheless, the painting can spark curiosity. If the juxtaposition of old (paint residues) and new (painting), or the title “Field of Mars” – made up of the terms “Mars” and “field” and, incidentally, also the name of a place of political confrontation in ancient Rome – helps to trigger associations, then that moves me as an artist.
