Between color field and color trace

Blue, turquoise, and green define Output 4. The colors lie over one another in open fields, interrupted by red, orange, small light traces, and a dark concentration at the center. Some areas appear almost calm, others like deposits of a very rapid process.

From a distance, the color fields merge into a peculiar spatial depth. Up close, this coherence dissolves again. What remains are color, material, overlays, and individual traces – some clearly visible, others almost vanished.

The painting seems to be organizing itself without ever fully settling.

Half an hour of preparation for a few minutes of painting

The outputs of the Schmiertafel series arise from a deliberately contradictory working process. Colors, tools and procedure are prepared for around half an hour. For the actual painting of the canvas, only about one to two minutes remain.

This turns the preparation into a kind of guideline. But as soon as the painting process begins, this order changes.

In Output 4, this can be seen particularly clearly. Some areas of color remain, others are shifted or layered over. Small material residues and unexpected color accents are not removed. They are part of what the process has produced.

The painting is prepared – but not fully anticipated.

What happens between input and result?

The term output comes from a world in which we are used to entering something and receiving an answer. Working with ChatGPT also initially follows this seemingly simple principle: prompt, processing, output.

The Schmiertafel translates this idea into an analogue, material process.

But paint does not follow instructions. It runs, adheres, mixes, resists. Speed replaces the possibility of constant correction. The result still carries the original intention within it, but is no longer identical with it.

This creates an in-between space between input and result.

Perhaps the painting begins right there.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Output 4 is a unique original from my studio in Wiesbaden. This small oil painting belongs to the Smear Board series and combines abstract color painting with an experimental method between planning, speed and chance.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work up to 2007 was strongly influenced by expressive painting, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting.
