Redwind and Gnus – African wilderness in expressive oil painting
Powerful depiction of a herd of gnus
This work from the Redwind series shows a herd of wildebeest moving in a ghostly way through a glowing landscape. Warm yellows and reds merge with the “fossil” painting technique, characterized by multi-layered glazes, sanding marks, and a relief-like surface. This creates an archaic impression that recalls ancient rock paintings.
Color effect and symbolism
The animals seem like ghosts of the savannah, embedded in a play of colors made up of earthy ochre, red-brown, and dark accents. The composition radiates calm, movement, and primal energy all at once, making the connection between nature, animal, and abstract painting palpable.

About the artist Mark Hellbusch
I have been a freelance painter since 1997 and have worked with a wide variety of themes in painting.
