A found object of painting
“Kleines Fundstück im Braunen” (“Small Find in Brown”) emerged from a section of a painter’s palette. What was originally part of a working process was removed from its context and further developed into an independent painting.
Layers of paint, overlays and traces of numerous decisions condense into a surprisingly complex composition within a small space.
A picture within a picture
The intensely colored section appears like a small window within a larger pictorial surface. While the vibrant center is shaped by movement, contrasts, and shifts in color, the surrounding brown area creates calm and focus.
This creates a tension between the accidental and the preserved, between vibrant color and quiet surroundings.
Material and construction
The work is based on a wooden panel with two framing levels. An outer frame defines the boundary of the picture, while an inner frame contains the section of the painter’s palette.
The area in between was covered with jute and fixed to the wooden panel under high pressure. This creates a calm yet tension-filled surface that directs the gaze toward the central found object and amplifies its impact.
Brown as pictorial space
The warm brown area recalls earth, wood, or aged materials. It does not form a background in the classical sense, but a pictorial space in its own right.
This gives the small color fragment the character of a found object – something discovered, preserved and meant to be seen anew.
