Splash 19 - abstract painting with colorful design

The thrown paint: between painting and design object.

The round canvas of the painting "Splash 19" has a diameter of 80 cm. The painting is created in mixed media. Both acrylic and lacquer paints were used. The contemporary approach arises, on the one hand, from the use of a “painting machine” – a modified drill – and, on the other, from experimenting with throwing paint. The result is initially design, which only becomes “abstract” through reference to the working process. 

Bright colors are simultaneously thrown onto the canvas.

The round canvas was first primed in white. Then colorful paints were thrown onto the canvas: red, yellow, magenta, orange, white, green, blue, and black. The rotation of the canvas causes slight distortions of the color stripes as well as the formation of (outward-directed) color lines that mix with the color stripes and spots.

Abstract painting or design?

At first glance, the painting “Splash 19” appears abstract. However, “abstract” is a flexible term that, in this case, is better understood in relation to the working process. For me personally, it is above all the result of the short, entertaining experiment in the foreground. In addition to the joy of creating, during the painting process I engage with form and color compositions, ruptures and dynamics. This engagement can traditionally be assigned to the field of design. 

Since a lot goes wrong when experimenting, I’m also happy to start over now and then – and only get a little annoyed about it...

Although the Splash painting emerged from experimental painting, it creates a coherent, very pleasant, positive mood. The lightness is primarily achieved through the elegance and grace of the shapes and colors. In this way, any spaces can be decorated with paintings that lie between abstract art and design.

The splash images are round and relatively light. To attach them, you only need a Nail in the wall. If you're interested in multiple paintings, you can playfully engage with series or even clusters of images.
