Surreal encounter in the “Pondroom”
The large-format painting “In the Pondroom” was created in 2007 in Berlin and belongs to my works from a phase of intensive expressive and surreal painting. On the wide canvas, several hybrid figures – half human, half animal – encounter one another in an enigmatic water landscape.
The pictorial space is reminiscent of an imaginary pond room (“Pondroom”) with water lilies, which appears both natural and artificial at the same time. The figures face each other as if in a silent dialogue. Their faces seem mask-like, alien and emotionally charged.
In particular, the large eyes, the unusual skin textures and the intense use of color create a strong psychological tension. The figures appear simultaneously alert, vulnerable and mysterious – as if they were observing or scrutinizing one another.
The expressive oil painting with strong contrasts and impasto color fields reinforces this impression. The background with its luminous water lilies creates an almost dreamlike space in which reality and fantasy merge.
The painting deliberately moves between Surrealism, expressive figuration, and modern symbolic painting.
Themes of surreal painting
In many of my earlier works I explore figures, masks and hybrid beings that make human emotions visible in unusual ways.
“In the Pondroom” also belongs to this creative phase. The figures appear like beings from another world – and yet they reflect very human emotions:
-
Observation
-
Distance
-
Strangeness
-
Encounter
