Square – A paintbox in a square

Powerful order and expressive diversity

“Square” (140 × 145 × 5 cm, 2021) is a work that transforms the classic paint box into a monumental composition. In a strictly rectangular structure, bold fields of color unfold here – from radiant lemon yellow and rich green to intense red and deep blue and violet.

The right side is structured by round color plates that appear like glowing islands in a sea of colors. On the left side, by contrast, large-scale color fields with visible materiality and impasto structure develop. This creates a tension-filled dialogue between surface and circle, order and playful chance, calm and energy.

“Square” invites you to experience the richness and diversity of colors – a homage to the elemental nature of painting, in which the tool itself becomes a work of art.

Sold – and now in private ownership

This work from the series “The Paint Box” is now in a private collection. “Square” is exemplary of the synthesis of structure and freedom that characterizes Mark Hellbusch’s work. With its clear structure and expressive abundance of color, it has a powerful, iconic presence in the room.
