A tulip as pictorial sign

Flower III does not show a botanical study or a lifelike flower. Instead, the tulip appears as a simple symbol. With just a few lines, a form emerges that is instantly recognizable and yet remains open.

It is precisely this reduction that gives the painting its special impact. The tulip is not described, but suggested. It exists as a memory, as a sign and as an idea.

Schmiertafel – Between beauty and simplification

The series Schmiertafel deals with symbols everyone knows. Flowers, smileys or trees appear as simple forms whose meaning seems self-evident.

In Blume III, this simplification becomes particularly clear. The red tulip stands for beauty, nature and growth. At the same time, it seems to have been reduced to the essentials. The color only partially fills the form, some areas remain open and the lines feel like a quick note or a memory.

The tulip remains recognizable, yet it loses its self-evidence. A familiar symbol turns into an open question.

The power of reduction

In contrast to many other flowers in the series, Blume III does not draw its strength from abundance, but from restraint. The large white area creates space and calm. The few color accents gain weight as a result.

The luminous red of the blossom immediately draws the eye. The green leaves and the delicate color remnants in the background, by contrast, seem almost fleeting. This creates a balance between presence and fragility.

Between drawing and painting

The black linework is reminiscent of a simple drawing, while the oil paint creates movement, chance, and change. Both levels exist simultaneously and partly contradict each other.

As a result, Flower III moves between illustration and free painting, between symbol and process. The image shows not only a tulip, but also the uncertainty of its existence.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Blume III is a unique original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The work belongs to the Smear Board series and combines familiar pictorial signs with experimental oil painting and an open, process-based visual language.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997 and have worked with a wide variety of themes in painting. While until 2007 I was occupied almost exclusively with expressive painting, today my focus lies more on experimental art. My personal background, as well as almost all artistic themes can be found under “About us.”
