Order from colour

In Output 5, the colors lie side by side in horizontal rows and individual fields. Light tones, ocher, red, and an almost black central zone meet turquoise and green.

The grid gives the painting a clear order. At the same time, irregularities, shifts and small traces of color from the rapid painting process remain visible.

Half an hour of preparation for a few minutes of painting

The outputs of the Schmiertafel series arise from a deliberately contradictory working process. Colors, tools and procedure are prepared for around half an hour. For the actual painting of the canvas, only about one to two minutes remain.

The more precisely the initial order is prepared, the more visible the deviations that arise during painting become. Especially in Output 5, two things therefore collide directly: the prepared grid and what the paint makes of it.

The order is predetermined. The result is not.

What happens between input and result?

The term output comes from a world in which we are used to entering something and receiving an answer. Working with ChatGPT also initially follows this seemingly simple principle: prompt, processing, output.

The Schmiertafel translates this idea into an analogue, material process.

But paint does not follow instructions. It adheres, mixes, is shifted or comes to a halt in unexpected places. The brief painting time allows only limited corrections. What becomes visible in the end follows the original plan – but not completely.

Between plan and result a gap remains.

And it is precisely this gap that belongs to the painting.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Output 5 is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The square oil painting is part of the Schmiertafel series and combines geometric order with a fast, experimental painting process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work up to 2007 was strongly influenced by expressive painting, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting. You can find my personal background as well as an overview of my artistic themes and series of works in the “About us” section.
