Dark surface and hidden color

A large dark area defines Output 6. Black and anthracite overlay violet, green, orange and light tones that re-emerge mainly at the edges.

The underlying colors have not disappeared. They remain as traces and breakthroughs, revealing parts of the preceding painting process.

Half an hour of preparation. A few minutes of painting.

The outputs of the Schmiertafel series arise from an unusual relationship between preparation and execution. Colours, tools and sequence are prepared for roughly half an hour. The actual painting process then takes only about one to two minutes.

This short time frame changes the role of control. Decisions have to be made immediately, layers of paint overlap, and what has already been painted can disappear again within seconds.

In Output 6 this process becomes particularly visible: beneath the dark surface, another chromatic order seems to persist.

What came before is no longer visible – and yet still there.

Between input and outcome

The term Output refers to the result of a process. One conceptual starting point of Schmiertafel is communication with systems like ChatGPT: an input is followed by processing, then an output.

In painting, this seemingly clear sequence becomes more uncertain. A specification can be prepared, but material, speed and movement change it during its execution. What appears in the end cannot be fully derived from what was fixed at the beginning.

Something is lost. Something else is added.

And some things remain hidden.

The “output” is less an answer than what remains from a process.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Output 6 is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The 80 × 60 cm oil painting belongs to the Schmiertafel series and combines abstract painting with an experimental method between preparation, speed and loss of control.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work was strongly influenced by expressive painting up until 2007, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting. You can find my personal background as well as an overview of my artistic themes and series of works in the “About us” section.
