Expressive art with oil paints: expressive portrait.
The artwork “Fiona” shows a girl standing in front of a bare, undecorated wall. In stark contrast to her doll-like narrow shoulders is her determined gaze. The agreeable words from her mouth cost her effort and distort her face. She looks pale, her nose goes almost unnoticed. Her hairstyle, eyes, and mouth, however, are rendered with full spatial presence. Her eyes and mouth appear almost mobile: Fiona could be the image of a very young, ambitious intern who wants little in life apart from a career.
With the portrait “Fiona”, owners and viewers are repeatedly prompted to discuss it: there is (playful) competition in that as well.
Preparations for Painting
The portrait “Fiona” was created in Berlin in 2004 on a canvas stretched over double (but offset) stretcher frames. The lower stretcher frames form a rectangle of 130 × 120 cm, the upper ones a parallelogram of approximately 120 × 110 cm. This creates a subtly confusing surface, matching the portrait.
Good to know about "Fiona"
The portrait "Fiona" was created in 2005 in Berlin. She has no personal significance for me; like almost all portraits from the "Hunters" series, she simply fell into my hands by chance. An advertising photo, an information brochure, a report – portraits are shown everywhere. Some of them trigger thoughts in me on the subject of "competition", which I then use.
