A flower full of light
Flower II is among the friendliest and most open works in the Schmiertafel series. The flower appears bright, light and almost self-evident. Yellow petals surround a luminous orange center, while green and turquoise tones complement the motif.
The form remains clearly recognizable. At the same time, there is a sense that the painting is still changing. Individual traces of color run beyond the contours, overlays remain visible and small irregularities prevent any sense of perfection.
It’s precisely this that makes the flower feel alive.
Schmiertafel – The first cracks in the familiar
The series Schmiertafel deals with generally known symbols. Flowers, smileys or trees at first appear clear and easy to understand.
Blume II also uses a simple, familiar form. But on closer inspection it becomes clear that the order is not completely closed. The circles of the petals shift slightly against one another, colour fields remain open and individual decisions appear deliberately unfinished.
The flower still stands for beauty and harmony. At the same time, the first small irritations appear. The familiar begins to change without losing its identity.
Color as movement
What stands out most is the luminosity of the colors. Yellow, orange, green and turquoise create a bright, almost summery mood. The oil paint remains visible and physically present. Layers overlap, paint residues emerge and small traces of the painting process are preserved.
In this way, a painting emerges that not only depicts a flower, but also reveals its own creation.
Between symbol and free painting
The circular petals recall a simple drawing. At the same time, the color develops a life of its own that cannot be fully controlled.
In this way, Blume II moves between symbol and painting, between recognisability and openness. The work shows a moment in which beauty still appears intact, yet its stability is already being questioned.
Original painting by Mark Hellbusch
Blume II is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The work belongs to the Schmiertafel series and combines familiar pictorial signs with experimental oil painting and an open, process-based visual language.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997 and have worked with a wide variety of themes in painting. While until 2007 I was occupied almost exclusively with expressive painting, today my focus lies more on experimental art. My personal background, as well as almost all artistic themes can be found under “About us.”
