Colour and structure

In Output 10, bright yellows, greens, and oranges encounter violet, blue, and a dark concentration at the center. The individual color fields overlap and form an irregular, clearly visible structure.

In many places, the movement of the tool remains directly preserved in the oil paint. Small traces of different colours interrupt the larger areas and reveal that further layers of paint lie beneath the visible surface.

Half an hour of preparation. A few minutes of painting.

The outputs in the Schmiertafel series arise from an unusual relationship between preparation and execution. Colors, tools, and procedure are prepared for roughly half an hour. For the actual painting process, only about one to two minutes remain.

In this short time, the prepared colors encounter one another directly. They are shifted, layered or partially revealed again. The speed prevents every change from being controlled or subsequently corrected.

In Output 10, this process remains particularly clearly preserved in the surface.

The finished painting does not show color alone. It preserves the traces of its own creation.

Between input and outcome

One conceptual starting point of the Schmiertafel is communication with systems like ChatGPT: An input is followed by a process – and finally an output.

Here too, everything begins with a plan. Colors, positions and sequence are prepared. But during execution, the material alters this order. The result contains the original plan without fully conforming to it.

What exactly happens in these few minutes can only be partially retraced afterwards.

The output shows the result. The path leading there remains open.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Output 10 is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. The 50 × 70 cm oil painting belongs to the Schmiertafel series and combines intense color with a fast, experimental painting process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work up to 2007 was strongly influenced by expressive painting, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting.
