Modern painting of color and order

In Output 11, violet, green, turquoise, red, and yellow meet in color fields of varying sizes. An originally graphic order remains visible in places, while in others its boundaries dissolve through overlaps and blurring.

The individual colors do not stand isolated next to one another. They merge into an open color structure in which order and dissolution remain visible at the same time.

Long preparation. Fast painting.

The outputs of the Schmiertafel series arise from a strong temporal contrast. The preparation of colors, tools and procedure takes significantly more time than the actual painting.

Once everything is prepared, the painting is created within a few minutes.

This speed is part of the method. The previously developed order cannot be arbitrarily corrected while painting. Colors shift, boundaries become permeable and decisions must be made immediately.

In Output 11, the prepared structure therefore remains visible – but only as a framework.

The plan determines the beginning, not the end.

From graphic structure to abstract painting

Schmiertafel begins with order: fields, positions, colours and sequences are defined. During the painting process, this graphic structure loses its clarity.

In this way, Output 11 moves between ordered color fields and free abstract painting. The grid is present without fully determining the finished image.

What was planned and what actually emerged lie on top of one another.

Prompt, process, output

One conceptual starting point of the series is communication with systems like ChatGPT. An input is processed – and we receive an output.

In Schmiertafel this principle becomes a material process. There is a prepared input, a brief process and finally a visible result. But colour follows no calculation. Material, movement and speed alter the original specification.

The output therefore carries its origin within itself without simply depicting it.

You see the result. What exactly happened along the way remains open.

Original paintings and contemporary art by Mark Hellbusch

Output 11 is an original oil painting from my studio in Wiesbaden. This 70 × 50 cm one-of-a-kind work belongs to the Smear Board series and combines contemporary abstract painting, color fields, and graphic order with an experimental working process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work was strongly influenced by expressive painting up until 2007, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting. You can find my personal background as well as an overview of my artistic themes and series of works in the “About us” section.
