Colorful abstract painting

Yellow, orange and green define large areas of Output 13. They are contrasted by violet and blue in the lower part of the painting as well as a dark concentration in the centre.

Some areas of color remain separate, others interlock. Vertical traces run through the painting, making the movement of the painting process directly visible.

Long preparation. Fast painting.

The outputs of the Smear Board series arise from a strong contrast: preparing colors, tools and procedure takes significantly more time than the actual painting. Once everything is ready, the image is created within a few minutes.

Speed is part of the method. Colors are shifted and connected, prepared boundaries dissolve and individual traces remain. What happens in the process cannot be arbitrarily corrected.

In Output 13, the original order is still recognisable. At the same time, the painting process has clearly transformed it.

The initial specification remains visible – but not untouched.

Between color field and color trace

The Schmiertafel begins with a prepared structure. Colours are assigned positions, areas are laid out and a sequence is defined.

In the finished painting, two different states therefore meet: the planned order of the color fields and the traces of a fast, physical painting process.

In Output 13 the two still stand side by side. Clear color fields encounter transitions, overlays and visible material traces.

Prompt, process, output

One conceptual starting point of the series is communication with systems like ChatGPT: An input is processed and generates an output.

The Schmiertafel translates this principle into painting. Here, too, there is a prepared input and a visible result. But between the two lies a process that can only be controlled to a limited extent.

Material, speed, and movement alter the original premise.

The output is the result—not the repetition of the plan.

Original paintings and contemporary colour painting

Output 13 is an original oil painting from my studio in Wiesbaden. This 70 × 50 cm one-of-a-kind work belongs to the Smear Board series and combines intense color fields with a fast, experimental painting process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work was strongly influenced by expressive painting up until 2007, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting.
