Radiant colours and vertical colour fields
In Output 14, turquoise, green, and blue stand alongside warm areas of yellow, orange, and pink. Violet runs through large parts of the painting and connects the different color zones.
The composition develops primarily in a vertical direction. Broader areas of color encounter narrower traces, overlays and dark condensations. The original order remains legible without dominating the painting.
Long preparation. Fast painting.
The outputs in the Schmiertafel series arise from a strong contrast in timing. Colors, tools, and procedure are carefully prepared. The actual painting is then created within just a few minutes.
In this short time, the prepared order is exposed to the speed of painting. Colors are shifted, mixed, and layered. Individual areas remain, others change within just a few movements.
Preparation creates the possibilities. The painting process decides which of them remain.
Abstract color painting between order and movement
Output 14 still clearly shows the structure with which the painting process began. At the same time, its boundaries repeatedly dissolve through movement and overlapping.
This is precisely where an essential part of the Schmiertafel lies: the painting emerges neither completely freely nor from a fixed design. Order and loss of control are at work simultaneously.
What was prepared remains visible – but in altered form.
Prompt, process, output
The term Output refers to another starting point of the series: communication with systems such as ChatGPT. An input is processed and leads to a result.
The Schmiertafel transfers this structure into an analog painting process. Colors, positions, and sequence form the input. Then a brief process begins, the result of which cannot be fully predicted.
In the finished painting, both are therefore preserved: the original specification and what happened to it during its processing.
Between input and output lies the part that cannot be fully planned.
Original paintings and modern abstract art
Output 14 is an original oil painting from my studio in Wiesbaden. This 70 × 50 cm one-of-a-kind piece belongs to the Smear Board series and combines radiant color fields with a fast, experimental painting process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work up to 2007 was strongly shaped by expressive painting, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting. You can find my personal background as well as an overview of my series of works in the “About us” section.
