A grid of color

In Output 8, vertical bands of color stand side by side and are intersected by horizontal divisions. Blue, violet, and green meet red, orange, and pink. Some fields remain clearly defined, others blend into one another.

The pre-planned order is still clearly visible in the finished painting. At the same time, blurred edges, overlays and small irregularities reveal what happened to it during the rapid painting process.

Half an hour of preparation. A few minutes of painting.

The outputs of the Schmiertafel series arise from an unusual relationship between preparation and execution. Colours, tools and sequence are prepared for roughly half an hour. The actual painting process then takes only about one to two minutes.

In Output 8, the initial structure is particularly clear. The grid specifies where something is supposed to happen. But during execution, its boundaries become permeable. Colors are shifted, layered or carried into neighboring areas.

The order remains visible – together with its deviations.

What happens between input and result?

One conceptual starting point of the Schmiertafel is communication with systems like ChatGPT: An input is processed and generates an output.

In painting, this principle becomes a material experiment. Here, too, there is a prepared input: colors, positions, tools, and a sequence. But what actually happens during the brief act of painting cannot be fully predetermined.

The output contains the plan, but also its transformations.

You can trace back where it began, but not every step that led to its final state.

Something has happened between the initial premise and the final result.

Original painting by Mark Hellbusch

Output 8 is a one-of-a-kind original from my studio in Wiesbaden. This color-intense oil painting belongs to the Schmiertafel series and combines a prepared color structure with a fast, experimental painting process.

I have been a freelance painter since 1997. While my work was strongly influenced by expressive painting up to 2007, my focus today is increasingly on experimental forms of painting. You can find my personal background as well as an overview of my artistic themes and series of works in the “About us” section.
